NANCY PERLMAN
Nancy Perlman received her BFA in Studio Arts; drawing, painting and sculpture at Ohio University, Athens. Her complex mixed media paintings explore the interface between form and formlessness. They are abstract in orientation, built up of swirling textures created by a combination of torn canvas and textured paint, on surfaces worked into a state of vibrant agitation. Suggestions of figures emerge and fall back into the intertwined canvas strips, and are heightened or played down through meticulously applied color layers. These artworks investigate emotional states of being with the cool clarity of an informed observer, and they challenge the audience to explore their own states of being through interaction with these shifting forms. Over time, the overtly figurative structure of her work has shifted from one extreme (identifiable figuration) to the other (abstract color fields). In all instances, they attest to a dedicated will. Her work is intimate, in the sense that although she sometimes sends paintings out to be included in group exhibitions, she has mostly used her paintings to document the changing seasons of her own existence. Her triumph is to have created affective artworks that transcend that impulse to engage existence as such. The paintings bear testament to the truth of time, and its relentless unfolding.
